The International Taste & Quality Institute: Afghan saffron is the best in the world

The production of saffron in Afghanistan is expected to surpass 4,000 kg this year, with Officials expressing optimism that the rise of saffron production could help Afghan farmers to leave the illicit opium cultivation. The latest prediction comes in line with President Ashraf Ghani’s commitment to support the agriculture sector. The increase of saffron production could help the farmers to boost their income by opting legal cultivation over illicit products such as opium. Saffron cultivation will not only help the Afghan farmers increase their income but will help Afghanistan become self-sufficient with the export of the product, besides production and export of other agricultural products. The International Taste & Quality Institute named Afghanistan’s saffron the best in the world for the third consecutive year in mid 2015. The award, in the form of a 3 Star Certificate, was given to Afghanistan saffron after testing about 300 samples.

Minister of Mines  of Afghanistan   Dr. Daud Shah Saba

Afghanistan’s National Women’s Cycling Team has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Italian parliamentarians

The Team has used the bicycle as a vehicle for social justice, enduring violence and social stigma. In 2013, it became the first Afghan women’s team to compete on the international stage, at the Asian Cycling Championships in Delhi, India.  Afghanistan had a women’s team as early as 1986, but that program was scuttled during Soviet and subsequent Taliban control of the country. It was reborn in 2011 when Abdul Sediq, coach of the Afghan men’s national team, founded a team around his daughter, Marjan “Mariam” Sedequi. The team now has dozens of women, who ride in pants, loose-fitting shirts, and hijabs beneath helmets to avoid attracting additional unwanted attention. A feature-length documentary on the team is due for release in 2016. Following a media campaign to include the bicycle in this year’s Nobel nominations, 118 Italian parliamentarians from all political groups signed to nominate the Afghan Women’s Cycling Team.

A multiphased mega-project, Kabul New City is the first of its kind of development in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan

Kabul New City - Real Estate’s Next BIG THING Having worked with major real estate projects in Dubai in the “Wild West” good old days – when fantastical property developments were launching every month – my ears instantly pricked up when I heard about Kabul New City. A multi-phased “mega-project,” Kabul New City is the first of its kind of development in Afghanistan. It was conceptualized to address the severe housing shortage as well as lack of employment facing the ever-increasing population of Afghanistan’s capital city, Kabul. With a long term promise of 500,000 housing units for an eventual population of 3 million, plus the creation of an estimated 500,000 jobs, Kabul New City is set to stimulate the country’s economy in ways not imaginable just a few years ago. Attending a presentation about Kabul New City, I was able to meet the faces behind the project; the Dehsabz City Development Authority (DCDA) . This entity is the regulator and management authority over-seeing the

Investing in Afghanistan

The Government of Afghanistan actively supports investment in the private sector as a means to creating a prosperous market economy in Afghanistan.   Your decision to consider investing in Afghanistan is a smart one. There is no region in the world with greater untapped economic potential than Central Asia. As an area rich in human and natural resources, profitable investment opportunities abound. Historically, Afghanistan has been at the heart of major trading routes, amongst them, the fabled Silk Road, which is one of many that have served the region throughout the centuries. Over the past ten years, the Afghan people have steadily progressed towards peace and prosperity, and its economy has seen meteoric growth (The Afghan capital Kabul has become one of the world’s fastest-growing cities). Once again, Afghanistan is emerging as a central hub for trade as the economies of Central and South Asia continue to grow and become increasingly integrated into the global economy. Do
