Afghanistan earned over $4.5m for showing Bactrian Treasury abroad

Displaying the Bactrian Treasury abroad has brought in over 4.5 million dollars for Afghanistan. It was displayed in more than ten countries over the past 13 years. The Bactrian Treasury is recognized as one of the biggest collections of gold in the world and was discovered four decades ago in the Tela Tapa area of Sherberghan district, the center of northern Jawzjan province of Afghanistan. The collection is composed of jewels and gold, and was discovered from a royal cemetery. Seven corpses were decorated with thousands of pieces of gold. The treasure belonged to the Kushan Empire. The Kushan Empire was formed by the Yuezhi in the Bactrian territories in the early 1st century.

Pakistan proposes railroad with Afghanistan to help boost trade between the two countries

The Pakistan Railways has announced plans to construct a rail link with neighbouring Afghanistan to improve trade and facilitate passengers.  The railway track will connect Pakistan’s Chaman district of Balochistan with the Spin Boldak town of the Kandahar province in Afghanistan, Pakistan Minister for Railways announced at a press conference. In the first phase, about 12 km railway track will be laid from Chaman to Spin Boldak, he said. After its completion, the railway track could be extended to Kandahar city if the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan expressed its willingness, the minister added. The proposed rail project has been pending for the past many years.

Ensuring access to electricity for vulnerable communities in Afghanistan

ADB has approved a $154.4 million grant to boost the supply of power in Afghanistan by extending the country’s power grid into the western provinces of Herat and Farah, ensuring access to electricity for vulnerable communities in those provinces. The project will extend power supply from Turkmenistan under the ongoing power purchase and sales agreement between the two countries. This includes supplying power transmission from local wind and solar photovoltaic projects of up to 100 megawatts and substituting electricity generated from diesel with renewable and imported gas-based grid power at a lower cost. Pakistan plans to establish Joint Trade Markets with Afghanistan

The Government of Pakistan has decided to establish 12 Joint Trade Markets (JBTMs) on Durand Line, Pakistan's embassy in Kabul said in a statement. "The JBTMs are believed to promote the wellbeing of the people living on both sides of the Durand Line, rehabilitate those affected by anti-smuggling drive, economically integrate the neglected areas, formalize bilateral trade and transform local economies," the statement said. The statement also mentioned that Pakistan has prepared a draft memorandum of understanding on the establishment of JBTMs with Afghanistan, covering all aspects, including the proposed list of items to be traded in these markets.

Siemens Energy helps Afghanistan to produce electricity from renewable energy resources

The Government of The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan signed an agreement of cooperation with Siemens Energy to help boost the Afghan energy sector. “We will build an Afghanistan where citizens can look forward to reliable power, not only for their homes and offices but to ensure that their products, whether agricultural, industrial or services can rely on sustained, 24-hour energy, seven days a week, 365 days a year,” The Afghan President Ghani said. Christian Bruch, the CEO of Siemens Energy, said that the company will help Afghanistan produce electricity from renewable energy resources. “Afghanistan is blessed with abundant renewable resources…. By using these resources, the country will make a big step forward in development. Siemens Energy has all the ingredients to support you in this part,” he said.

Afghanistan welcomes the first train from Iran

An experimental train from Iran arrived in Afghanistan (today 28 October 2020). The train arrived on Herat-Khaf railway as officials preparing to inaugurate the 3rd phase of the project next week. The 3rd phase begins from Iran’s Sham Tegh and ends in Herat’s Rawzanak village. Technical teams from Iran and Afghanistan are in Herat for the inauguration. The 4th (final) phase which ends in Herat city is under construction. The new railway is expected to be used for carrying both goods and passengers.

Sar-e-Pul, Afghanistan - Onion farmers warned they would return to growing poppy if the government does not find markets for their products

Farmers in the northern Afghan province of Sar-e-Pul asked the government to help them find markets to sell their agricultural products.  Currently the farmers sell their products, particularly the onions, for less than the cost of growing the crop. Farmers said this year there has been a significant rise in the onion crop in the province. They also warned they would return to growing poppy if the government does not find markets for their products. “There is a significant increase in crops, but there is no market, what should we do with all these products,” said one farmer in Sar-e-Pul. “The Ministry of Agriculture should solve our problems, we do not have storage areas to keep the produce,” said Obaidullah, a resident in Beshka village in Sar-e-Pul. “We travelled to Sar-e-Pul several times, now we are in Kabul and want to assess the problems,” said Ghulam Sakhi Attayee, a member of the Sar-e-Pul farmers union. Marathon of Afghanistan

Over 400 runners participated in the 2020 Marathon of Afghanistan in Bamyan Province that ended on Friday, 23 October.  40% of the participants were women. Runners from Afghanistan, Scotland, Wales, US, France, Swiss and Russian Federation took part in the race to compete in 42,1 km distance. Afghan runners participated in the event from eight provinces. It was the 6th year the Marathon is held in Bamyan.

First-Ever paper production factory opens in Kabul, Afghanistan

The first-ever paper factory has opened in Kabul, and it has the potential to meet the annual demand for white paper in the country. According to the factory officials, the factory has the capacity to produce 120 tons of paper daily. With a staff of over 200, the factory collects and recycles up to 15 tons of paper waste a day in Kabul. Afghanistan Kandahar Province produces five tons of Pistachios this year

The Department of Agriculture of Kandahar expect pistachio production in the province to reach 5 tons this year. “Farmers here are fond of growing pistachios, and we’ve made sure to implement programs that strengthening gardening in the province,” said a representative of Kandahar’s Department of Agriculture. According to the officials, pistachio seedlings have been planted in about 4,500 acres of land in 6 districts of the Province. As many as 450,000 hectares of pistachios have been registered in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.

Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine - Minister for Strategic Industries of Ukraine Oleh Uruskyy held an official meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Wali Monawar. Italy has allocated $118 million for the construction of an electric power line in Afghanistan

The Italian Government has allocated 118 million USD through the Afghan National Army Trust Fund for the construction of an electric power line in the provinces of Herat and Farah, in Western Afghanistan. The project, which will be carried out by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), will lead to a 220 kV, 311 kilometers long electric power line being laid between Herat and Farah. It will entail the construction of sub-stations, which are crucial for the distribution of power to the end-user, in Farah and Shindand, as well as the renovation of the Herat substation. Sri Lanka and Afghanistan sign a historic MOU on cooperation to expand bilateral trade ties

The CEOs of the Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Investment (ACCI) Sayed Zaman Hashemi and the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Manjula de Silva virtually signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the two chambers.  The MOU provides for establishment of an Afghanistan-Sri Lanka Trade Desk within both Chambers, helping implement both sides’ shared commercial goals.
