Hundreds of square kilometers of minefields in Afghanistan yet to be cleared

The head of Afghanistan Natural Disaster Management Authority, said that of 3,600 square km of minefields in the country, 2,500 square km were cleared in recent years.
Afghanistan is one the world’s heavily mined countries, more than 140 people are killed each month due to explosion of mines. The Mine Action Programme of Afghanistan is seeking approximately $117 million for 2017 to implement full scaled activities as it aims to declare Afghanistan free of mines by 2023.
