The Afghan products are expected to be sent through Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Georgia to Turkey and onwards to European markets. “We expect this will not only be symbolic, but on a permanent basis. We should have the opportunity to export our fruit and minerals through the route to overcome our dependency on others,” said Khan Jan Alokozay, deputy head of ACCI. Afghanistan has vast potential for its own textile industry say analysts, yet clothing and fabrics are imported annually to the value of over USD 500 million

Officials from the Afghan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said that Afghanistan imports over USD 500 million worth of textiles/clothing on an annual basis. It's imported from China, Iran, Turkey, Korea, India and Pakistan. Meanwhile a number of economic commentators say the government should invest in rebuilding Afghanistan’s textile factories to curb the country's reliance on others for fabrics. Analysts say Afghanistan has vast potential for fabrics and cloth. “Currently we do not have production in Afghanistan, there are some factories in the country, but material is imported from abroad, this is an important industry which has been concentrated,” said deputy head of ACCI Khan Jan Alokozai. “There is no production in Afghanistan's clothing sector, all of it is imported from abroad, but shoes are produced inside the country,” said fabrics importer Obaidullah. Meanwhile residents have said that imported textiles and clothing is sold at higher prices at local m

Afghanistan - High fuel prices discussed

Afghanistan - Fuel costs increase by eight percent in four months

The cost of fuel, petrol and diesel, has increased by eight percent in the last four months which has raised concerns among motorists across the country. Fuel sellers said the increase in price on international markets and also the decrease in value of the Afghani against the US dollar are the main reasons for the price increase. Statistics show four months ago; one liter of petrol cost 46 AFN and one liter of diesel cost 43 AFN. But now, one liter of petrol costs 59 AFN and one liter of diesel costs 55 AFN. “When the cost of fuel increases on global markets and when there are changes in the value of foreign currencies, these all affect the cost of fuel on the local market,” Saleh, a manager of a fuel distributing company said. In the meantime, Fuel and Gas Enterprise officials said a number of people who have an influence on the fuel market may increase the cost to earn more money. Mustafa Khalazai, deputy head of the Fuel and Gas Enterprise, said those people who deliberately increa

The so-called 'key step towards promotion of foreign investment in Afghanistan'

Contract signing for extraction of two major Afghan gold and copper mines in the US sparked criticism as members of civil society say the accords were signed under US and UK pressure, and in violation of Afghanistan’s Minerals Law. The Afghan embassy in Washington said late on Friday that the contracts for Badakhshan Gold Mine and Balkhab Copper Deposit were inked in DC on Friday by Afghan Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum Nagis Nehan and Centar Ltd Founder Ian Hannam, who was once known the “King of Mining” in the British press for his role in deals involving mining giants such as BHP Billiton Ltd. and Xstrata PLC. According to the embassy statement, the licenses will grant Centar Ltd to explore the mineral deposits. Addressing the agreement signing ceremony, an official of the embassy Fazl Rahman Fazl Yar termed the inking of the agreements as a key step towards promotion of foreign investment in Afghanistan. Instead of being looted, Afghanistan’s resources should be strategically exploited for the country’s benefit

The insurgency in Afghanistan has gained strength and the government’s influence has shrunk despite significant international efforts since 2001 when the world intervened in Afghanistan. Various political, diplomatic, and military approaches have been tried and ample aid has been provided to stabilize the country. However, these efforts have produced few results while entangling the world in an open-ended conflict. To stabilize the country and weaken the insurgency, development partners must address the growing poverty and the government’s inability to financially sustain itself by assisting Afghanistan in managing its vast natural resources. Afghanistan’s resources have been poorly managed and left open for smugglers to loot the country’s wealth while poverty fuels the insurgency. If properly managed, Afghan mineral resources can not only be a stabilizing force but can provide the world with additional resources. Over 50 percent of the Afghan population lives in extreme poverty, with

The revenue of the Transport Department of Afghanistan northern Kunduz province has surged by 40%

Transport Director told media representatives that 13 million Afghanis were collected in revenue in the first six months of the current year. The department’s income stood at eight million Afghanis during the same period in the previous year. “Our revenue has surged by 40 percent this year.” He linked the revenue increase to anti-corruption efforts and the appointment of professional individuals. But provincial council members said efforts to eradicate corruption had not been enough. They called for a stepped-up drive to eliminate graft. The governor’s spokesman, said an effective campaign against corruption had been ongoing. Reform in the department had resulted in increased revenue, the spokesman argued.

Uzbek President invites India to join Afghan Railway Project

India will be invited to help with a key railway project in Afghanistan during Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s visit to New Delhi. The railway, almost 650 km, which will connect Mazar-e-Sharif and Herat cities and will later be extended to Kabul, is a major project agreed to by President Ashraf Ghani and President Mirziyoyev last year. Many of the preliminary surveys for the project have already been completed. “We support a greater presence of India in Central Asia, and hope for some benefits of that for Afghanistan. I hope that negotiations with PM Modi will open a new page in our bilateral relations,” Special Assistant for Foreign Affairs Ilhom Nematov said as quoted in a report by The Hindu. “If India would be involved in [the railway line] construction, we would welcome them because of India’s proven record and experience, and because of its contribution to bringing peace to Afghanistan,” he said. He said Uzbekistan has an interest in opening trade and connectivity ro

It is time for the war in Afghanistan to end

Today [Tuesday, September 11, 2018] marks 17 years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, a day commemorated with pledges to “never forget.”  Our grief is well remembered. But too many of us have forgotten, or soon will, what followed on the heels of 9/11: our apparently endless war in Afghanistan. Nearly two decades on, the longest conflict in US history fades in and out of American consciousness — mostly out. The war has settled into grimly familiar patterns large and small. On a weekly and monthly level, the same headlines roll in again and again: A suicide bomber blows up a market, mosque, or other public venue, and dozens of innocents die. A coalition soldier is killed and a few more wounded. A high-ranking Islamic State, al Qaeda, Taliban, or other insurgency leader dies, and his role is soon refilled, hydra-like, by a new generation of radical. Then there are patterns on a larger scale. Three presidential administrations from two political parties have overseen five tr

EXPORTING CORRUPTION - PROGRESS REPORT 2018: ASSESSING ENFORCEMENT OF THE OECD ANTI-BRIBERY CONVENTION

Transparency International’s 2018 Progress Report is an independent assessment of the enforcement of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Anti-Bribery Convention, which requires parties to criminalize bribery of foreign public officials and introduce related measures . The Convention is a key instrument for curbing global corruption because the 44 signatory countries are responsible for approximately 65 per cent of world exports and more than 75 per cent of total foreign direct investment outflows. This twelfth such report also assesses enforcement in China, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, India and Singapore, which are not parties to the OECD Convention but are major exporters, accounting for 18 per cent of world exports. Hong Kong is covered separately in the report, as it is an autonomous territory, with a different legal system from China and export data compiled separately. The report has been prepared b

American foreign policy shows once again that it is against the economic development of Afghanistan

Afghanistan Chamber of Commerce and Industries (ACCI) said that Afghan traders are bringing in fewer goods from Europe and Turkey via Iran in the wake of Washington’s new sanctions against Tehran. According to traders, this has had a negative impact on Afghanistan-Iran trade ties. The ACCI said not only were Afghan traders suffering but foreign traders were also feeling the pinch as their trade volume through Iran’s Bandar-e-Abbas and Chabahar ports to Afghanistan has dropped considerably. ACCI officials said this is because foreign companies are afraid of the repercussions they could face if dealing through or with Iran.   Afghan traders had plans to increase the volume of imports and exports to Iran, China and European countries through Bandar-e-Abbas and Chabahar ports, but following the new US sanctions on Tehran, the situation has changed. “Our traders are afraid that if they export goods to China and European countries through Chabahar Port, they might face with challenges i

Afghanistan has huge natural resources which could be used to make it a net power exporter

Afghanistan State power distribution company DABS signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the second India-Afghanistan International Trade and Investment show, according to India’s Economic Times report.  The 4-day event, which started yesterday 12 September 2018, is aimed at bolstering trade between the two countries and is showcasing business and investment opportunities in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. The country unfortunately does not have universal access of power as just about 35% of the people have access to power and that also in the four main cities," said Mr. Sinha.
